A year in New Zealand lead me to researching the local wildlife where I developed a fascination with the Kakapo. This extraordinary bird now numbers less than 200, post introduction of predators to New Zealand, rendering it critically endangered. Extraordinary because they are flightless yet their main food source is found in the treetops and weighing in at up to four kilograms, eating is no easy feat. They are nocturnal, bear whiskers and are the worlds’ only flightless parrot. Thankfully some clever conservationists have cleared a couple of islands of predators in NZ where they are beginning to multiply their numbers. A slow process given their gestation is between two and four years and many become non-viable due to inbreeding….
